City scoops awards at Tidy Towns

Horsham has been named Victoria Tidiest Town for the seventh time.

The city also scooped a host of other awards at a Victorian Sustainable Communities Tidy Towns Awards online ceremony on Wednesday.

The victory means Horsham will now go on to represent Victoria at the national awards and will be the host of the state awards in 2022. 

Mayor Robyn Gulline said the awards represented an outstanding result for Horsham.

“It's absolutely fantastic and certainly a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Tidy Towns Committee, but also to the general public for all the wonderful initiatives that they do,” she said.

“Horsham was represented with 11 nominations in nine categories, reflecting the significant effort made by the community in enhancing aesthetics and sustainability in a range of projects.

“Well done Horsham.”

Tidy Towns Committee members plus several nominees in various award categories attended a screening of the awards at the Civic Centre.

Running nationally since 1990, the Australian Sustainable Communities Tidy Towns Awards have evolved to encompass projects and initiatives with a focus on environmental sustainability and resource management to reflect a growing awareness of the importance of community-led environmental action.

Horsham and community groups received the following awards:

• Overall winner as Victoria’s tidiest town
• The Young Leader award – Bart Turgoose – in recognition of his work with Horsham Show, and a range of other community interests
• Community category – the Wimmera Cancer Centre, reflecting the community’s role in fundraising to make this facility possible
• Energy Category – solar power, energy efficiency and water savings at Horsham Regional Livestock Exchange
• Waste Category (highly commended) – the use of Polyrok, by Horsham Concrete, in the Coles Car Park renovation works.
