More than 100 people pull on their running shoes each Saturday morning to get active, have fun and run or walk five kilometres against the clock at the Wimmera River parkrun.

Among the registered participants is Councillor Josh Koenig, who’s among the half a million Australians registered with parkrun.

Cr Koenig is encouraging Horsham people to sign up and get active through the Premier’s Active April challenge.

“Parkrun events promote active fun and fitness and a chance to connect with other people, which is just as important for your well-being as physical activity,” Cr Koenig said.

“It’s important that we all invest time in ourselves and look after our health and general well-being.

“So if you don’t think you can make the distance, you can still get along to your local parkrun event and be involved in another way,” he said.

In Horsham, the runs start from Sawyer Park at 8am every Saturday. It’s free to participate but runners need to register before their first event.

Cr Koenig said Horsham participants, aged from four to 84, had covered more than 16,000 kilometres along the river track since the launch in August last year.

“It’s definitely not just for runners. All ages and fitness levels are welcome and it’s all about having fun in an inclusive family environment,” Cr Koenig said.

“We have a volunteer tail walker whose job each week is to come last. It doesn't matter if you take 20 minutes or 80 minutes to complete the 5km course.”
