Residents Recycle Right

Across the state Victorians are doing the right thing when it comes to recycling, and residents in the Horsham Rural City Council (HRCC) municipality are no exception.

However, there is always room for improvement. Over the coming weeks HRCC will run a campaign encouraging those who aren’t already recycling right to get on board with best practise waste management in the home.

When the incorrect items are placed in recycling, this can mean a whole batch of recycling ends up in landfill.

To help reduce this occurring, the best thing people can do is know exactly what can, and can’t go in the yellow recycle bin.

The key items that end up in recycling that shouldn’t be there are soft plastics, food scraps, clothing and polystyrene. However, the good news is that these things don’t have to end up in landfill either.

Soft plastic can be taken to your nearest supermarket soft plastic collection point. Food scraps can be added to compost or fed to chooks, allowing for the natural decomposition process least harmful to the environment to occur. If in good condition, clothing can be donated to charity and if clean, polystyrene can be taken to your nearest transfer station.

Annual audits of Council’s household waste collection show that overall, residents in the municipality are great at recycling and despite the impact of Coronavirus this trend continues.

Ongoing communication and education around waste management for all will ensure that we continue this good work, and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill in the longer term.
