Horsham Rural City Council has appointed Brenda Wellman as the new Director of the Horsham Regional Art Gallery (HRAG) after the departure of long-term Director Adam Harding.

Ms Wellman has extensive skills and experience working for regional galleries.

Her tenure includes time with the Albury Regional Art Gallery from 2002 to 2009 and from 2011 to 2017 she has coordinated successful exhibitions and associated programs at the Art Gallery of Ballarat.

Ms Wellman has recently completed a 12-month secondment at National Exhibitions Touring Support (NETS) Victoria, based at the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia.

Working with NETS Victoria gave Ms Wellman the opportunity to oversee strategic projects and exhibitions at numerous regional galleries, including Horsham.

“I’ve always been impressed with Horsham and how the gallery was responsive to its community, and how it encourages local artists to be actively involved in its exhibitions and special programs,” Ms Wellman said.

“The reputation of the gallery was also a factor, the gallery is on par with larger galleries and I hope that I continue to maintain this reputation,” she said.

Horsham Rural City Council Director Community and Wellbeing Kevin O’Brien said it was an exciting time for the Gallery.

“We welcome Brenda to the team and we look forward to her sharing and developing a new vision for the Gallery and supporting the presentation and diversity of Australian art and design practice for our gallery,” Mr O’Brien said.
