Testing of water samples from Green Lake has shown that it is again safe for recreation activities.

Horsham Rural City Council Infrastructure Director John Martin said that test results received Thursday 10 January have shown the level of blue-green algae has fallen below the level where it is of concern to recreation uses.

“This allows Council to open the lake to swimming and boating,” Mr Martin said.

“Lake users are encouraged to be on the lookout for any areas of iridescent algae floating on the surface, and avoid these areas.”

The lake had been closed since last Thursday (January 3) when moderate blue-green algae levels were detected.

Council staff will continue to monitor the lake for the presence of toxic algae as more hot weather, conducive to algal growth is forecast for the weeks ahead.
