Horsham Rural City Council is investigating the illegal dumping of rubbish into the Wimmera River near the Riverside Road bridge.

Several bags of rubbish have been recovered from the water which have apparently been thrown from the bridge within the past two weeks.

Community Safety Unit Acting Co-Ordinator Jeremy Dean said HRCC and the Environmental Protection Agency were following several promising leads.

“There are multiple items from the bags indicating the rubbish has come from one particular Creek Crescent address,” Mr Dean said.

“At this stage we are withholding the names of several individuals whose items have been located, these people will be spoken to in the coming days.

“Someone knows something and I am hoping that they will do the right thing and report the people responsible.”

Mr Dean said the maximum penalty for illegal dumping of rubbish exceeded $16,000 if the matter was prosecuted in the Magistrate’s Court.

“Anyone who has any information or CCTV footage is urged to contact Horsham Rural City Council on 53829777. Callers can remain anonymous if the caller wishes to do so,” he said.
