Natimuk Gymnastics Club create Ninja Course

This year Natimuk and District Gymnastics Club was one of the successful community organisations sharing in a total of $201,436 through Horsham Rural City Council’s Community Development Grants Program.

The Community Development Grants Program is an annual funding opportunity offering cash support to community organisations for special projects, improvements and initiatives.

The Natimuk and District Gymnastics Club was granted $2,500 to help buy equipment for a new Ninja course.

Head Coach Lynette Morrow says that this Ninja course will allow the club to reach a new group of people in the community, especially those interested in agility, strength and physical challenges, but who traditionally aren’t that keen on the clubs main offering – gymnastics.

“This will open up a whole new avenue," says Ms Morrow.

The idea for the course has come from the popularity of the Ninja Warrior TV show.

The gymnastics club already has several components for a Ninja course, but now it will be able to expand and change the course, allowing for a wider range of ages to participate, from primary children through to adults.

It will provide an opportunity to develop skills in agility and balance with jumping platforms, and a mini wall for climbing. Ninja courses also provide an opportunity for people to face challenges and overcome fear in a structured and safe environment.

The Natimuk and District Gymnastics Club draws attendance from across the region, with 300 participants in 2019. Many travel up to 1.5 hours to attend the club, and before COVID-19 and state border closures, one family travelled from Mt Gambier every week.

After taking a break due to the global pandemic, the club is now back this term, with extra cleaning regimes and participants moving through the space in a structured way. Ms Morrow says it’s worth the extra work just to have the kids back in the gym.

The club has already received enquiries about its new Ninja course and looks forward to welcoming new faces to the club.
