Food Safety

Food safety is essential to provide safe food for all members of the community. Keeping food safe and free of any contamination is critical to public health, and knowing how to properly handle, clean, store, and cook your food is vital in helping to reduce the risk of harmful microorganisms that can cause severe illness or even death.

Food safety is knowing that you won't get sick eating your next piece of fruit from your fridge or takeaway meal from your favourite restaurant.

Council's role in food safety is by inspecting and registering food businesses under the Food Act 1984. The Environmental Health Unit enforces this Act, and works with businesses to ensure that they understand and abide by this Act as well as those set out by Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ)This legislation covers the preparation and sale of food to members of the public.

Any person, business, or community group that prepares and sells food to the public must be registered with the Council in which they are located or in the case of a food vehicle, where the food vehicle is garaged.
