Liquor Licence for Sporting Clubs

A liquor licence allows you to sell alcohol for consumption as part of your business. Liquor licences ensure that licensed premises are situated in appropriate locations, and the permit application process takes into account the impact of the licensed premises on the amenity of the surrounding area.

The type of licence required will depend on the type of event or business you are running and how you wish to supply the liquor but may include

  • Restaurant and cafe

  • Temporary limited licence (event under 5,000 people)

  • Major event licence (event over 5,000 people)

  • Bottleshop

  • Sporting and community club

  • BYO (BYO permit, party bus)

  • Winery or brewery

If you are planning a new event or starting a new business or making changes to your existing licence, Horsham Rural City have a business development team that can assist you.  Contact during business hours (9am to 5pm) on 03 5382 9777 or email business@hrcc.vic.gov.au

In some cases a Planning Permit may also be required for the sale and consumption of liquor.  This is to ensure that licensed premises are situated in appropriate locations, and to ensure that the impact of the licensed premises on the amenity of the surrounding area is considered.

Do i need a Planning Permit to obtain a Liquor Licence?

There are many types of liquor licences. Most require Planning permission prior to obtaining a liquor licence from the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC).

The type of licence required is determined by VGCCC, not by council or the applicant. Therefore, you should contact VGCCC to determine the appropriate type of licence before making an application for a Planning Permit. Details of the type of liquor licences that require a Planning Permit can be found here

  • if the hours of trading allowed under any licence are to be extended
  • if the number of patrons allowed under any licence is to be increased
  • The licensed area (‘red line’) is being extended
