Plans for second pedestrian bridge

Horsham Rural City Council has proposed a new pedestrian bridge to connect the east and west banks of the Wimmera River at Hamilton Street.

After considering eight potential locations for a bridge upstream of the Western Highway bridge, Hamilton Street was identified as the preferred site as it offers a clear and direct link with the residential area on the west side.

Council’s Director of Infrastructure John Martin said this project was important in helping to connect Horsham.

“With the development of a large area to the south east of the river, a need for additional pedestrian and bicycle access over the river has been identified,” he said.

“This will connect approximately 2000 residents to the Central Activity District of Horsham, including workplaces, schools and Wimmera Base Hospital.”

The need for a second pedestrian bridge crossing the Wimmera River in Horsham was first identified in 2010 and has subsequently been proposed in several strategies including Council’s 2017-21 Health and Wellbeing Plan, the 2019-23 Council Plan, 2020 Horsham Urban Transport Plan and the City to River Masterplan.

At this stage, geotechnical studies are underway and funding for the project is still being sought.

As the project develops the community will be updated on progress via Council’s web page and other non-digital platforms.
