Opportunity for riverfront food and beverage trading

It’s now easier for food van businesses to trade along the banks of the Wimmera River after Horsham Rural City Council updated its Mobile Food and Beverage Trading Policy.

A dedicated spot near Horsham City Rowing Club has been selected. It will be available to businesses via a booking system, with permit fees waived until July 2022.

Previously mobile food and beverage operators were restricted to trading on roadsides. 

Mayor Robyn Gulline said promoting the site to multiple businesses would allow for more consistent and regular activity occurring at the site.

“A previous trial of a pop up mobile vendor at the river received feedback that indicated the trial would have been more successful if the proprietors had more consistent opening hours,” she said. 

“The trial also had greater success at ticketed events where alcohol and live music were available.

“This is something we have taken on board, and overall, we think the updated policy will afford the community with more outdoor options for meeting spaces and socialising.” Cr Gulline said.

Cr Gulline said the project was part of an overarching vision that is currently being developed for central Horsham and the riverfront.

It is also a commitment in the recently-adopted Council Plan 2021-2024.

“Under the theme of liveability, we are working to create a healthy and connected community for all ages, abilities and backgrounds,” she said.

“Council’s plan is to revitalise the city as a place to live, work, play and invest,” Cr Gulline said.
