Works to remove parking meters throughout the CBD will begin from 7:00am tomorrow, Tuesday 5 May, following Council’s decision in June 2025 to discontinue their use.

The removal of parking meters delivers on a much-awaited change for the community and businesses, and finalises Council’s transition to free, time-limited parking in the city centre.

The decision followed strong support from the community and local businesses, and reflects Council’s ongoing commitment to improving accessibility, supporting local trade, and enhancing the overall visitor experience in the CBD.

While the works program is not expected to cause major delays, there may be minor obstructions to foot traffic in some locations as crews undertake the removal process. Pedestrians are encouraged to take care around work areas and follow any temporary signage in place.

Mayor Cr Brian Klowss said Council was proud to be delivering on its commitment to the community.

“We said we would listen to our community and take action, and that’s exactly what we’re doing,” Cr Klowss said.

“Removing these parking meters is about following through on our promise and delivering a practical outcome people can see and experience every day.”

“This change supports our local businesses, makes it easier for people to access the CBD, and reinforces our commitment to putting the needs of our community first.”

Two-hour free parking will continue in signed areas, with existing time limits—such as 30-minute, two-hour and four-hour zones—remaining in place and enforced through traditional methods.

Council thanks the community for its patience and cooperation while these works are carried out.
