Upgrades to The Station youth centre

The new-look Station Youth Centre in Horsham is now open, with the second stage of improvement works reaching completion.

Landscaping has been finished at the front of the site, complementing the stage one work completed at the rear in 2021.

New additions include a barbecue and shelter, two lawn areas, concrete seating, bike hoops and trees.  

Inside the main building, accessibility has been improved and energy-efficient heating and cooling systems installed.

The enhancements mark a significant milestone in Horsham Rural City Council’s commitment to providing safe and inclusive spaces for the municipality’s youth.

Project Overview

The Stage 2 Redevelopment of The Station Youth Centre has transformed it into a vibrant, multi-purpose hub where young people and the wider community can engage in various activities and services. Here are the key highlights:

1. Large Indoor/Outdoor Space: The upgraded facility now boasts a spacious indoor/outdoor area that prioritises safety and accessibility.
2. Youth-Focused Outdoor Space: The need for a youth-focused outdoor area was emphasised during the pandemic. The new space provides a safe environment for gatherings and socialisation.
3. Demolition of Old House: The removal of the old house not only cleared the way for the new public area but also ensures safe access to the rear section of the site.
4. Central Location: Situated in the heart of Horsham, The Station supports activities within the Central Activity District (CAD) and contributes to the local hospitality industry.

Community Impact

The Station plays a crucial role in supporting the mental health and well-being of young people. The project’s gender-neutral design fosters a sense of belonging and inclusiveness for those living with disabilities or identifying with the LGBTQIA+ community. We anticipate the following outcomes:

1. Improved Community Perceptions: The community will appreciate the enhanced amenities and public amenity provided by The Station.
2. Increased Community Activities: The public open space area will host a variety of activities, promoting social cohesion.
3. Youth Participation: Young people living with disabilities will benefit from improved amenities, encouraging greater participation.
4. Inclusive Space: The Station will serve as a safe and inclusive gathering spot for the multicultural youth group and the Rainbow (LGBTQIA+) community.
5. Community Use: The green oasis in the CAD will be a valuable asset for years to come.
